We built this quarter zip layer in solid maroon for the cold start of an early round. The four-way stretch knit gives your shoulders room across the backswing without adding bulk over a collared shirt. Pull the zip down when the sun breaks through or leave the mock collar standing against a chill breeze.

What we would tell you on the range

Contrast mock collar. The collar stands upright on its own with contrasting inner trim that peeks out when unzipped. It frames a polo collar underneath without crowding your neck or catching on your chin during a swing.
Four-way stretch knit. We chose a soft, lightweight knit with four-way stretch that moves across the upper back and shoulders. The fabric gives full arm coverage against wind and mild sun while breathing well as the day warms up.
Quarter front zip. The smooth quarter zipper lets you regulate airflow through the front panel as the morning chill lifts. Pull it up tight on the first tee, then crack it open once you hit the back nine.
Washing and care. Machine wash cold with like colours and tumble dry on low. The knit resists shrinking and keeps its deep maroon tone without softening out of shape or weakening at the cuffs and collar seam.

Worth doing

Wash it cold, inside out, with the placket buttoned so it keeps its line.
Hang it to dry; performance jersey is usually wearable again by morning.
Store it on a hanger with real shoulders, not folded damp in the bag.

Worth avoiding

Fabric softener. It coats the fibre and the wicking quietly stops working.
The hot tumble dryer, which is hard on elastane and on printed panels.
An iron face-down on a print or a logo.
Leaving it wadded in the trunk between weekends.
