Keeping performance fabric quick: care that actually matters

Technical knits do not wear out so much as get switched off, one wash at a time. The short list of what does the switching.

Softener is the main enemy

Wicking works because the fibre surface pulls moisture along it. Fabric softener works by coating fibre surfaces. Those are the same surfaces. A softened performance polo still looks perfect and quietly holds sweat like cotton; skip the softener and the shirt stays the shirt you bought.

Cold, inside out, buttoned

Cold water protects the elastane, washing inside out protects the face and any print, and buttoning the placket stops the collar wrestling everything else in the drum. None of it adds a minute to laundry day.

The dryer question

Heat is hard on elastane and on heat-applied prints. Hang the shirt instead; performance jersey is usually dry in hours, which is the whole point of the fabric. If the collar has creased, a cool iron through a cloth, never face-down on a print.

Between rounds, not just between washes

The worst place a polo spends time is wadded damp in a trunk from Saturday to Saturday. Hang it the evening you get back, even unwashed; airing does most of what a wash would and costs the fabric nothing.
