What we would tell you on the range

  • Collar and placket. The mock collar is cut to stay upright when zipped against a brisk morning draft. Lower the zipper halfway down the placket once the temperature climbs to dump heat without snagging your polo collar.
  • Shoulder and stretch. Four-way stretch gives through the shoulders and arms, so the fabric moves with your takeaway rather than binding at the chest. The sleeves stay put at the wrists when you draw them up your forearms.
  • Side tee holder. A small slot on the right flank holds a couple of wooden or plastic pegs where you can reach them. It keeps extra bulk out of your front pockets when you bend down to read a lie.
  • Washing and care. Machine wash cold with similar shades and dry flat or tumble low to keep the deep burgundy tone rich. The knit resists shrinking and needs no iron to hold its shape for your next morning tee time.

Worth doing

  • Wash it cold, inside out, with the placket buttoned so it keeps its line.
  • Hang it to dry; performance jersey is usually wearable again by morning.
  • Store it on a hanger with real shoulders, not folded damp in the bag.

Worth avoiding

  • Fabric softener. It coats the fibre and the wicking quietly stops working.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is hard on elastane and on printed panels.
  • An iron face-down on a print or a logo.
  • Leaving it wadded in the trunk between weekends.
