What we would tell you on the range

  • Wine melange knit. The yarn mixes heathered tones for a soft, textured look in wine. It blocks an early breeze without feeling heavy, and the smooth face glides over a polo without bunching around the chest or shoulders.
  • Mock neck and zipper. The stand collar stays upright to keep wind off your neck and lays flat when unzipped. A smooth slide lets you vent air quickly, with a clean inner finish that prevents rubbing against your throat.
  • Shoulders and sleeves. Long sleeves give full arm coverage against cold air, cut with enough ease through the arms for a full backswing. Cuffs stay put at the wrists when you push them up between shots.
  • Side tee slot and wash. A small slot on the right side holds a golf tee close at hand. Machine wash cold with similar shades and dry flat to keep the melange tone rich and the collar shape firm.

Worth doing

  • Wash it cold, inside out, with the placket buttoned so it keeps its line.
  • Hang it to dry; performance jersey is usually wearable again by morning.
  • Store it on a hanger with real shoulders, not folded damp in the bag.

Worth avoiding

  • Fabric softener. It coats the fibre and the wicking quietly stops working.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is hard on elastane and on printed panels.
  • An iron face-down on a print or a logo.
